The Marathon Church of Christ has been spreading the gospel to Florida Keys residents and vacationing visitors since the 1950’s. Additionally, we are blessed with numerous seasonal visitors who make Marathon their home for the winter months. While we may come from many different places, we join each other to praise God in worship and to study his word when we assemble here in Marathon. Come as you are and be part of the family in Marathon for a day or for a life time.
Irma Update: We can’t believe it has been over a month since Irma devastated the Florida Keys – and while the clean-up continues – many good things have been done to reach the communities of Marathon and Big Pine and beyond. We had the Churches of Christ Relief Effort Inc. bring down a semi-load of supplies and food and water and we have given out these items to over 400 families and we are still helping those who stop in to see us.
We also have seen improvement in all the debris being removed and the building being gutted and people helping to go through what can be salvaged. We have met family from Pinellas Park Church of Christ, Sunset Church of Christ has been down multiple times, a group from Miami-Dade college, and another group from Freed is coming. We have friends from Tulsa coming down, and have had many of our members down to help while also trying to take care of their own properties. So many have also sent donations and made phone calls and we know so many are praying for us. We appreciate each and everyone of you.
Tim has had help also with our first deliveries of furniture that we were able to order for people here in Marathon. We made 10 deliveries and three picked up their living room sets and everyone was so excited. People have lost all but their structures and so we are able to give them something to help them on their journey to recover and the joy we have seen has just been amazing. We have heard so many stories and seen picture after picture of what people across the Keys are going through. Please continue to keep them and us in your prayers. May God continue to be glorified and may people see Jesus in us.
We have also been successful in getting shoes for more people this last week and when the lady taking my order heared why we were buying so many shoes she gave us a 30 percent discount even on the sale prices – so a shout out to Payless shoes for their help. We have seen so much good – neighbors helping neighbors and many are being blessed.
While we have no final estimates for costs of repair the initial estimates ore around 80 to 100 thousand dollars to repair the church. The house has still not been inspected But we know it will take quite a bit for the house to be fixed as well. Right now in between deliveries and giving out food and supplies we are working to get what we can save put in storage.
We have set up a gofundme page for Tim and Kathy Thomspon Hurricane Irma disaster relief if you want to make donations there.
Otherwise if you would like to donate to the church we are receiving mail at our homestead address which is 16961 SW 302nd Terrace, Homestead FL 33030. Donations can be made out to Tim Thompson if wanting to donate to our family or to the Marathon Church of Christ for helping with repairing the church and church house.
The post office is running but not at full capacity yet down in Marathon so the other address provides an alternate place to send things till things are back up and running at the church.
